Calorictastic Christmas and Week results.

Previous weight: 84.85
Current weight: 85.95
Difference= +1.1 kgs

Christmas has come and gone and for the week that was I unleashed the beast! I had all the best intentions of getting some exercise during the days I was down in Napier but during the drive down I wondered; “If I eat whatever I want and do little/no physical exercise, I wonder what the damage would be?”…and so I did! Sunday was filled with steak sandwiches that were washed down with cider, many filled chicken wraps (with salad) and a few handfuls of cold chocolate fish. For some strange reason, I much prefer my chocolate fish frozen now. Christmas Eve was the same with leftover wraps, cheese and crackers with poached pork and roast vegetables. Christmas gave me a full cooked breakfast and constant snacking on nibbles throughout the day and into the evening, multiple pieces of chocolate slice and my one true weakness…MALTESERS! And I didn’t feel guilty while gorging like a ravenous hippo because who cares if you put on weight during the festive season? Santa doesn’t have body issues and I am sure he would leave me a note if I left him celery and water under besides the fireplace (that or he would steal my cutlery and leave me with a baby on my doorstep), Tis the season to be jolly and jolly is what I was! 1.1kgs is nothing; worst case scenario is it takes me another 2 weeks to get back on track but I would rather put the effort in for 14 days so I could enjoy the time away with my family. I know my mother would be heart broken if I turned down all the freshly dug potatoes that went with the Boxing Day Turkey due to my experiment and desire to eliminate white carbs. So, for 5 days (Sunday through to Thursday), I recharged and let loose and truly felt wonderful ( I put this down to the resetting of my thyroid’s conversion rate of T4 to T3 and not giving a shit). But, as we all know, good things must come to an end. I am glad I had some time away from the gym and the experiment because as soon as I was done I truly felt more determined to get back and rip this experiment a new one. Sometimes you need to deviate off the path to get an appreciation for where you are going and that is what happened. I am more motivated, more appreciative and more than ready to make the last 2 months really count. And if I truly have put on 1.1kgs and it’s not water or gravity, I truly don’t mind because with the new changes coming up, it will disappear in a few days. I truly hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and did enjoy the festivities. It’s truly a blessing to have wonderful friends and family that love you and so a few days off and a few kilos heavier truly fail to compare to the love and support you have.

I’ll be getting ready to see if Ice baths do help with weight loss and muscle repair as I’ve decided to take boxing/MMA classes as well as going to the gym WHILE DOING BJJ AND WALKING/RUNNING THE DOG! I know I said that this experiment was a few small changes but the one thing I have grown to appreciate is the physicality and rush that you get after a hard workout or long run. The endorphins that pump through you make you feel amazing and it is good for your inner chimp to get out of the cage before it starts rattling it and causing some problems. Tire the chimp and you are a better person to be around. So, I’ll most likely record my first Ice Bath and explain the science around it and also now try to add a bit of muscle to my frame. So, kettlebells will be getting heavier and lunges will be getting longer but this is all part of the fun! I am the Dragon and you’re privy to a great becoming…”,

Week 7 results ( I have lost track of the time)

Previous weight: 86kgs.
Current weight: 84.85kgs.
Difference- 1.15kgs.

You know when something goes really well and you just want to it to continue but you know that you will eventually run into some trouble? Yea, that applies to relationships and weight loss. People can jump on the scales and suddenly be discouraged with what is said. Last week I lost 400 grams and if I was someone who took the scales as a literal figure of what my body is doing then there was a very good chance I would have run past the Pilate classes crying, driving over to the nearest Dunkin Donuts and gorging like a hungry, hungry Hippo. Scales will lie. They don’t take into consideration the food you just ate, the water or sodium intake or rocking new socks you have. They take everything into consideration and give you a number that can make you want to cry. But in all honesty, the best way to measure fat loss is simple; a tape measure is your best friend! The scales may be a bastard but inches will always tell you the truth. I have a pair of 32 sized pants that I brought earlier this year for work and they were tight; I even had to sew a button back on them due to sucking it in going horribly wrong. But alas! They now fit rather nicely on my shrinking hips. 400 grams? I’ll take the 4 inches anytime so scales, sort it out please.  Now, I will most likely be working out for the last time solidly this week as the gym shuts over Christmas and New Years; this week will be exercising solidly before the going home to enjoy a few days with family and god forbid some of my mother’s famous roast lamb! I’ll give running a go for 2 weeks I think while I wait for the gym to reopen Also the gym routine will be changing as next year I’ll try and really putting the body into shock and trailing a few new outlets of curiosity.

OH, no change to diet. Just kept following the same principles of eating clean. Although I might treat myself on Christmas to a slice of pav (with berries of course).

Week ? Results

Tweek week. I wanted to see what effect removing 1/2 the exercise time would result in.

Previous Weight= 86.4kgs
Current Weight= 86.00kgs

Difference= 400 grams.

So, getting a small amount of exercise (3 days compared to 5) will still result in weight loss but not as much as before. Simple. Remember to find a routine and stick to it for maximum results. I will continue with the normal routine and see how much of a difference it will be. Also this will be small and direct as I can't be bothered writing in depth analysis of this week. I did Christmas shopping and I am spent (both mentally and financially) so expect a more typical "Richard" update next week. Keep smiling and slathering Sriracha!

One Month on and here we go!

OK, for those just wanting results I’ll post them first. I will also write a bit of waffle and if you are interested in that then continue reading but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Previous Weight= 88.00kgs
Current Weight=86.4kgs
Difference= -1.4kgs.
Month difference= -5.44kgs.

Want to know see what 5kgs of Nutella looks like? Yea, that's the amount of fat loss I've had so far.

The secret this week is HOT SAUCE! Besides making most food taste better, the advantage of good quality Hot Sauce is the added benefit of capsaicin, the ingredient that gives chillies its heat. Good news and bad news; capsaicin does indeed ramp out the metabolism for a few hours when consumed but it only has limited effect. Once you can tolerate the Hot Sauce and stomach it without pain then you are in trouble. You either step up to a new hotter sauce or accept your fate with a tasty sauce that will bring flavour but no flab fighting benefits. For those wanting to ascend the spice ladder, it truly is a rewarding journey. (this site gets my personal recommendation http://www.tonguehammerfood.co.nz/death-sauce.html). Chillies indeed taste great but are part of the wider world of thermogenics. The basics are that it induces thermogenesis in which your metabolism (the conversion of oxygen and food into energy) ramps up causing higher conversion of food into energy and fat oxidation.  The same can be seen in caffeine and certain types of tea. If it works that is fantastic (there is some science behind it http://www.shs.brookes.ac.uk/images/pdfs/research/functional-food/conference/presentations/dulloo.pdf) but if not then I still enjoy spicy food!

Well it has been about a month since I started this experiment and in the time from starting till now, I must admit, the changes have come in leaps and bounds. Firstly, I must tell people that this is not a diet. There is no set of rules of I am following, just making substitutes of small things. White carbs are now switched with brown carbs, sauces are now homemade rather than store bought and cravings are managed with the super cheat day. Since having a higher nutrient dense intake (please see Week 1 and the green smoothie), I’ve not really had any huge cravings for ‘junk food’ (my friends know how much of a fiend I was for Maltesers) but in this month…nothing. No pizza, ice-cream, chocolate (until fatday) but I am using these things as a reward and not a comforter as previously seen. I’ll admit that I was a comfort eater and study was done with Maltesers and OJ (with the possibility of Squiggles if it was an all-nighter (in the absence of sleep your body needs calories…thanks Deadliest Catch). Of course as any student will know when an essay or project is due and you have yet to start it everything goes out the window and all attention and focus goes towards study. With this mind-set, a few sleepless nights, you can go from a few grams to a few kilos very quickly and it doesn’t help living at a hostel that caters (All those who went to HLH will remember the fantastic oily mess that was weekend meals). But as stated, a nutrient dense intake of food makes a huge difference and you will notice it in just a month. I have and I feel better for it in all aspects of my life; I feel more energetic, less hungry throughout the days and also feel better as a whole person. Combining this with the solid exercise regime, a decent sleeping pattern and mentally I feel like a much better person; more humble, clean, focused and open. I feel like a better person and that translates to being a better friend, better brother and better son and so on. I think that more people would benefit from this but living in a chaotic world with work deadlines and social pressures that is easier said than done. But without getting some sort of exercise, they have their inner chimp locked up and rattling the cage causing issues and problems. Have you ever come across someone who is just unpleasant to be around, snappy and short tempered? Yea, I like to believe their inner chimp is going bananas inside the cage and possibly flinging poop! But go for a run, lift some weights…anything physical and I think you will feel much better for it. I certainly do. And it could work for you! Just a thought after a decent workout from a sweaty, sore Richard. One month down and another 3 to go!
